Summer Reading Challenge
At ACA, we want to nurture skilled readers who develop a lifelong love of reading, and reading well is formed over time through practice, experience, and steady effort. Summer offers a unique opportunity for our students to be inspired by books and for families to fill our homes with books that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). We also know that God chose to reveal himself through the written Word, so as Christians, it’s important to become good readers who love to read God’s written Word.
The purpose of summer reading is to continue students’ exposure—beyond the classroom—to many of the classics: books that have endured because of their lasting worth. Students are encouraged to read as many classic works as possible, as these stories are not only rich in content but also among the most powerful tools for shaping and cultivating a child’s moral imagination.
In pursuit of these good aims, we invite all ACA students to read at least 900 minutes over the summer! (Rising kindergarteners may have all of those minutes read to them, and first graders may have 600 of those minutes read to them.) At least half of students' reading should be from books on Storyglory's book lists, which you can find here. You don't need to buy the books; the lists are designed to help you find high-quality children's literature.
Students should record their minutes on the log (linked below), and they'll enjoy a prize when school resumes in August!
